Soft Tissue Mobilisation
For post-injury pain in the lower limbs a course of soft tissue mobilisation can help restore soft tissue function and speed up your recovery process.
Soft Tissue Mobilisation: An Overview
With soft tissue mobilisation we focus on medically massaging the soft tissues in the foot, around the ankle, and in the lower limb. This brings pain relief for people suffering with issues caused by biomechanical dysfunction, Plantar Fasciitis and Metatarsalgia amongst others. It is also an effective treatment for more general injuries such as chronic ankle sprains.
Soft tissue mobilisation aids healing and reduces pain in a number of ways:
It straightens out any cross fibres in the muscle. This is what people generally refer to as a ‘knot’
It increases blood flow to the area, which helps with the natural healing process
It reduces the toughness of scar tissue by straightening the fibres
Soft Tissue Mobilisation can also be an effective tool alongside Gait Analysis and corrective Insole / Orthotic use. It allows us to use massage techniques to increase tension in ligaments that my have been stretched to their limit over years of ‘flat foot’ walking for example.
It is rare that the site of pain is the actual cause of the pain and so muscles, ligaments and structures higher up the limb must always be assessed and this is a fundamental principle that the technique is based on.
Soft Tissue Mobilisation: The Appointment
A typical soft tissue mobilisation appointment lasts around 30 minutes and we request you attend in shorts or loose trousers so that the lower limbs are easily accessible. It would also be helpful to wear or bring with you the shoes you wear the most so we can assess any impact these may be having on your condition.
We will discuss the level of pain you are experiencing on a scale of 0-10 along with your every day experiences of the problem and how it impacts your daily routine. The mobilisation massage techniques are then applied with a range of anti-inflammatory creams and oils based on your specific condition, alongside heat therapy where required.
We find this is typically a comfortable treatment where we focus not only on reducing your pain levels, but also to restore mobility and this is something we'd hope to see in positive changes throughout your normal week.
Physiotherapy
Whilst Podiatry focuses on the foot, ankle and lower limbs we do encounter situations where referral to a Physiotherapist would be ideal and so we work closely with Bradley Physio based in Rochdale, Bury and Rossendale.
