Ear Health Check & Microsuction Ear Wax Removal: An Overview

Good ear and hearing health is crucial for maintaining overall wellbeing and quality of life across people of all ages, and whilst we often focus on our ears for hearing, it’s easy to forget that they play a pivotal role in our balance too. When our ear health deteriorates the changes can be subtle, but the impact on our lives is significant as it can affect our social interactions, work performance and our general day to day activities.

As a society we haven’t prioritised the health of our ears (or feet!) in the same way that we have our eyes and teeth - it is common to attend annual appointments in both cases with entire high-street chains providing these services - but ears have been left behind. We’re looking to change that by introducing an annual Ear Health Check and where required providing Microsuction Ear Wax Removal at the same time.

Using the state of the art TypmaHealth digital otoscopy system we’re able to perform an ear examination, microsuction ear wax removal and hearing assessment from a single platform, with a support network of audiologists and ENT specialists to refer to if necessary. Combined we can start to restore the health of our ears one pair at a time.

Ear Health Check & Microsuction Ear Wax Removal: The Appointment

A typical Ear Health Check appointment lasts around 30 minutes and you may be asked to apply a couple of drops of olive oil to the ears in the days leading up to your appointment. Please note this service is only available for adults aged 18 and over. An Ear Health Check comprises of 3 main elements:

Ear Examination

Using the state of the art TypmaHealth otoscopy system we can capture high-definition colour images and video of your inner ear. This helps us to evalutate the health of your ears in more detail, but also enables us to share this with you, so you can better understand any treatment that may be required.

Microsuction Ear Wax Removal

If after your ear examination it has been determined that microsuction ear wax removal is required we can perform the treatment immediately. This modern approach involves using a gentle suction system, rather than water syringing, to carefully remove the ear wax without any mess. If the ear wax is particuarly compacted you may require a follow-up appointment after applying a wax softening treatment, this follow-up appointment is included at no-extra cost.

Hearing Assessment

If microsuction ear wax removal isn’t required we complete your Ear Health Check with a 10 minute hearing assessment. This involves placing a pair of over-ear headphones on and simply tapping the screen of the TympaHealth device when you hear a sound. Both ears are tested separately with 4 different frequencies, with the results providing an insight as to the quality of your hearing left to right, and is a vital tool when assessing any change in your ear health in 12 months time.
